5 Benefits of Trees You Probably Didn’t Know Yet
When we look at a tree, we see strength, history, stability and peacefulness. A tree is just there, a tree has seen it all, a tree tells you everything will be ok. But trees offer much more benefits than simply being a beautiful part of nature. With our Little Saps, we want to make the world a greener place. To explain why we are passionate about this mission, we’ve listed 5 somewhat unexpected benefits of trees.
1. A natural air-conditioner
Did you know that the evaporation from a single tree can produce the cooling effect of ten room-size, residential air conditioners operating 20 hours a day? Not only do trees provide shade, they also bring cooler air. And they look a whole lot better than an air-conditioner unit, don’t you think?
2. Trees are like friendly giants in neighborhoods
Streets and neighborhoods lined with trees invite residents to run or stroll in the area, which then leads to increased interaction with neighbors and creates a greater sense of community. Research has also shown that there’s less violence in greener areas. And last but not least, adding trees to your landscape increase home values by 5 to 15%.
3. Trees reduce climate change
A healthy forest is our most inexpensive, efficient and natural system to reduce climate change. So what can you do on a small scale to reduce climate change? Plant a tree! Trees do miracles with Co2: they use Co2 during photosynthesis and an average size tree can store hundreds of pounds of Co2 over its lifetime. A true game-changer when it comes to climate change.
4. Trees clean the air
Do you ever go hiking in the forest and start with a big, long inhale? Doesn’t the air smell so good and fresh? This is because trees absorb odors and pollutant gases (nitrogen oxides, ammonia, sulfur dioxide and ozone) and filter particulates out of the air by trapping them on their leaves and bark. So trees make for cleaner air! (Source: TreePeople.org)
5. Trees make for a better economy
Studies show that the more trees and landscaping a business district has, the more business will flow in. A tree-lined street will also slow traffic – enough to allow the drivers to look at the store fronts instead of whizzing by. In a shopping area filled with trees, people linger more and stay longer, also resulting in more sales. (Source: TreePeople.org)
